“Art with Mr. E” Â is the website of another art teacher. Â He has a fun project that I would like to share.
Line Design with Shading is quick and easy but with amazing results. His students just used markers and colored pencils, but this can be done with any drawing media and still come out great. I tried it with gel pens, colored pencils and a painting with oil pastels and water colors. Click here to see HIS students finished projects, and here to get a short step-by-step.
Check back soon to see my student’s examples of this project.

Â
Eric Carle is well known for his fun and colorful children’s books. His official website is full of fun ideas, activities and instructions for making paintings and collages in his fun style. My favorite is the slide show on how he makes his painted papers, but his slide show on his collage technique is a good one too. If you want to learn more about him as an author, watch the video on Scholastic’s website.
I recommend taking papers out of the recycling bin to create fun Eric Carle style paintings and then when dry use them in a fun collage. Mkaing the paintings is the most fun, but that is only half the process, so don’t forget to make something with the paper when they are dry. You might make a book cover, a birthday card, or even a wallet! Use the new colorful paper for origami animals, envelopes or artist trading cards. The uses are really endless!
All these links were screened and found acceptable for middle school students, however since most of them go to outside blogs there might be other material on the blogs that is not acceptable. Please notify me if the link is broken or the content is no longer school appropriate.

This short video was made by another teacher. IÂ found it on You Tube (but since that is blocked by our district I copied it to share with you.)
She uses chalk pastels to make a background (lots of messy belnding involoved here) then circle stencils and oil pastels to draw OVER the chalk pastels, finally she uses an eraser to make even more circles. Fun but messy experiment technique! I recommend using card STOCK paper to survive the many layers, the blending, rubbing and erasing without tearing your paper.

Weaving is both fun and relaxing. Here are a couple of great videos I found that show some easy and more complex weaving. These are from You Tube, but as you know they block that at school, so I made a copy of them so you can watch them at school.
Basics of Weaving on a Cardboard Loom and Primary Weaving
There are lots of yarn choices in our fiber center to try out these techniques. I recommend starting small or trade off with a friend, becasue these can take a long time to make.
