The Elements of Art: Color

Posted by cgaub on 10th October 2011

Student learned about color and made their own colorwheels with water color paints. They then had the opportunity to make a piece of MONOCHROMATIC art using any of our open studios. Although paint was the favorite, computers, collage and drawing were all used to make interesting pieces of art.

They also learned important Color vocabulary. These definitions should be in their binder or art folder and will be used to prepare for a future quiz.

LINE Art

Posted by cgaub on 26th September 2011

6th graders are learning the Elements of Art. First we studied Line and then the students are making a work of art that demonstrates LINE.

It must include all the TYPES of lines (horitontal, vertical, diagonal, zig-zag and curved) and must include some of the QUALITIES of line (thick, thin, light, dark, rough, smooth…)

Some ideas include:

Collage:

Cut out papers into different types of lines.

Or find magazine pictures that show different types of lines.

A Mondrian style artwork is created by cutting out strips of black construction paper and filling the areas with other color construction paper. Look at art work by Mondrian for inspiration. Lesson idea from Kinder Art

Drawing:

Divide the paper into several sections, at least 10. Then FILL each section with a different line/pattern design. Be sure to include actual, implied, vertical, horizontal, diagonal and contour lines.

Contour Drawing with a Line and Pattern background. Have students model and practice contour drawing. Then create sections of pattern and line around the contour drawing.

Combines Unit in Art 6th and 8th Grade

Posted by cgaub on 19th September 2011

Our First Unit is a style of art called “Combines”

  • TUE Sept. 13th Combines Part One We started the Combines Lesson by learning about a new artist. You can see our beginning power point where we learned about Artist Robert Rauschenberg and his way of creating combines. Combines Part One We then did some small sketches combining pictures of animals with pictures of tools. Students turned in their work at the end of the period for a score.
  • WED Sept. 14th Combines Part Two We started today’s lesson with a review of some student work and discussing the different strategies that were used to combine the images. Check out the student examples in this power point. Combine_Strategies We then expanded on the first activity, but combining some transportation pictures (cars, bikes) with some ideas (like stretching and bending) These drawings were also turned in at the end of the period for a score. Some students needed to take them home to continue and finish their work, but these should still be turned in.
  • THUR Sept. 15th  Combine Name Assignment brainstorming Today we did some group and class brainstorming to come up with a list of draw-able objects that begin with each letter of the alphabet. The goal was for students to write a list that included 2 draw-able objects for EACH Letter of their OWN name. HOMEWORK: Students were required to go home and add to their lists if necessary and come back to class on Friday with 2 items circled for each letter of their name. This homework was scored for completion.
  • FRI Sept. 16th  Combine Name Assignment rough draft Students spent time working on a rough draft practice of their name. We also did a Artist pledge and set expectations for studio work time.  HOMEWORK: Students were required to go home and continue work on their letters to be best prepared for their final draft.
  • MON Sept. 19th Combine Namel draft work time
  • Students need to get APPROVED to move from rough draft to final draft. Final Drafts can be in colored pencil, markers, paint, collage or computer.
  • TUE Sept. 20th Combine Name work time
  • WED Sept. 21st Combine Name DUE DATE!
