webquest-on-photography2

As we discussed in class this week, you are a part of photography history. The video, Captured Light, was filmed in 1995 a few years before the digital photography revolution of which you are now a part. Therefore, to help you better understand what it takes to create art with your photography, it is necessary to see and analyze the work of those photographers who are considered the masters of photography. The assignment for this research is attached to this blog so you can view it from and work on it at home if necessary.

This project will give you further experience in using the tools and menus of Adobe Photoshop while challenging you to develop your skills. Photo Restoration is a time honored skill and a real money maker for professional photographic studios. The average price of a restored photo from a retail outlet is about $90. The more damage that is apparent, the more the restoration costs. You have the opportunity to fix a family photograph (or one from the file in the Resources folder) and restore it to its original condition. What a great gift for a parent or grandparent!

If you repair a family photo for a gift, we can print it on the photo printer on photo paper. Copy and paste the “after” image into the Inbox for TLinnabary in the Courses Folder. Be sure to label it with your first initial and last name_restored.

Instructions for the Colorization Project. On Wednesday and Thursday, October 22 and 23, we will learn how to compose a black and white photograph and then to use selective colorization to ehance the composition. The purpose of this assignment is to help you with photographic composition as well as to give you practice in the use of the selection tools in Photoshop CS3. Adding color to black and white compositions is a time honored technique dating back to the earliest days of photography. Since color film was an invention of the twentieth century early photographers used this skill manually. You will use digital tools to give your photos a traditional look. This project will be due on November 7 for On Time points.

This Power Point will give you tips on how to do more than create a snapshot, and how to use photography to capture the Elements of Design and the Fine Art Standards in order to create art.

The 2007-2008 school year is quickly coming to its conclusion and when I look back, I realize that it has been a year of celebrations for myself and my two “peeps” who agreed to take on the task of technology integration to enhance student learning. For Sean and myself this has probably been a fairly easy task since we daily take on the task of working with digital visual arts. However, Jennifer has also stepped up to the task and has been instrumental in using her new equipment to make the math WASL more easily decipherable for her students with the use of her document camera and TI presenter calculator. When I go to the peer coaching workshops at ESD 189, I realize how fortunate I was in having two people volunteer for this who were willing to put in the time and effort to make the grant succeed. The icing on the cake is the fact that we have all done our part to “pay it forward” with our peers in our respective disciplines. We are not the experts, we just know to whom to address the questions. Next year, Melissa Webster will join our group and add geography, government and history into the mix.

Research Assignment for Advanced Photo

The purpose of this assignment is to help you refine your own skills and techniques by emulating the art of a recognized photographer. This can be someone from the earliest years of photography such as Edward Curtis or it could be someone as modern as Annie Liebowitz. Whether you enjoy the gritty realism of photo-journalism or the romance of portraiture, there is a photographic artist out there who will appeal to you. Your assignment will be to research and critique your favorite and to create your own mini-portfolio of photographs using some of the same stylistic techniques.

Each year the Advanced Photography classes create “READ” posters for our school library. Each student is responsible for two posters, one of a student and one of a staff member. In order for the posters to be laminated and in the library in April, they must be completed by March 25th. Click on the above links to see the requirement in detail as well as samples from previous years.

Your final project in this class will give you the opportunity to put all your photographic, artistic and communication skills together in the creation of a “seamless” photo-collage.  This project will require you to create a unified scene made from several different images that you, yourself, have taken. The project itself is worth 100 project points.

Then on the day of our final exam, each student will present his or her project and the process used to create the final piece. This presentation is worth 50 test points.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, there is a power point attachment at the top of this post that you can access to see past examples of this project.
